〈 Choku-so 〉

The special feature of the May version in 2014 of the magazine "Daihorin"(Great teachings of Buddhism) is "posthumous Buddhist name, grave and 'Chokuso'". It is very presumptuous to talk about something like the conclusion just to have browsed it, but I was surprised that the ordinary people did not know such a thing when I saw their questions about the funeral and the grave. I reflected that this expressed the negligence of our everyday enlightenment entirely.

The article on my mind is about "Choku-so" that is popular now. "Choku" means "direct" and "So" means "sending". This book explains "Choku-so" is the funeral of the cremation without so-called funeral courtesy after the death and it has been increasing rapidly since 2000. In addition, the book explains the etymology is from the secret language of the funeral companies and the word means that the body is brought directly from the hospital to the crematory.

I have already received two consultation requests about "Choku-so".

 The first one is,
"I attended the funeral of my friend, but I only saw the car off. They did not hold a wake and they did not have the sutra-chanting and a posthumous Buddhist name . Might it be said that that was a funeral?"

 The second one is,
"I saw off a father-in-law in "Choku-so", but I am in trouble because the relatives of my wife cannot accept that and they request me to do something."

I answered that "The funeral method is not decided by a law, and you cannot say right or wrong because that is the problem of the matters of the mind". However they did not seem to be able to understand it. They said "It might be so, but will this do?".

This book says about the social background, the cause and the dealing of "Choku-so" too. Syundo Aoyama who is the head of Aichi specialty nun temple shows how to cope with the boom of "Choku-so" in the sermon called "the heart of the mourning".

  • The person who had to die earlier must have a word of a will speaking with all his or her soul to the people who gathered there. One of the meanings of the funeral is to listen to the will of the dead person carefully and practice it in your real life.
  • You must not be swung around in idle thoughts that the funeral and the Buddhist memorial service are simple courtesy and a rush job for appearances and money. Those are the important time to face death and life and your life and to think that the clergy and the laity must work on together sincerely.

She says that the will of the dead person is "The death comes by all means. Live every day so that the day may come". I think that is the answer about how to see off a dead person.
