〈 Contentment 〉

"Contentment" means "to be satisfied" and it means to suppress greed that is unnecessary for you and not to expose dissatisfaction.

In Yuikyogyo (the last Buddhist teaching made by Shakyamuni), there is a description which says "because the person who has the avarice wants a profit, he has the suffering, but the person with a little covetousness has no anxiety. ・・・・・・・・・・You must think carefully about 'Contentment', if you want to be separated from the suffering".
An old poem says "The heart of a greedy person and the falling snow make person forget the way as they are piled up." It says there are many people who took the wrong way without escaping from greed. I wanted a car when I was young. Even if it was the small or used car that was enough. However, I remember that when I got the small and used car, my greed became higher. I wanted a new and standard size car this time.
Anyone knows that "Contentment" means to be satisfied and "non-contentment" means to covet. Yuikyogyo says "You create sufferings by coveting". However, hope or the expectation becomes a aim and support for a person and becomes the base of the way of life. It is difficult to draw a border line between "hope and a dream" and "coveting".
I visited "the Ashikaga school" in Tochigi last year. I saw the miniature of the container of "Yuza" there. Confucius saw this container and taught people and said,
"The container inclines when it is empty without water.
It stands straight when it is just right.
And it overflows and overturns when it is full with water".

If you replace "water" with "greed", you can understand "Contentment".
Many learned and virtuous priests like Dogen Zenji who founded Soto sect could take a farsighted view of it. They reached the stage of "free from avarice". Toshimitsu Doko the former chairman of Keidanren reached the stage. I am just impressed when I know the his way of life.
It is necessary for us to reconsider our present life.
