〈 "JI-HI" - Loving-kindness(Mercy) 〉

The word "mercy" is used well. "Merciless person", "a merciful person" and "for mercy's sake" are used.
"JI" of "JI-HI" comes from "friend" and means the friendly feeling.
     (or to grieve)
"HI" of "JI-HI" means assimilating you, that is to feel pity.
"JI" and "HI" are a little different, but have the same meaning essentially.
 Briefly,
"JI" is to give a friend profit and comfort.
"HI" is to exclude a disadvantageous thing for a friend and to exclude the pain of the friend.

The word "mercy" resembles teaching of Buddha, that is "oneself, another person and every animals are friends". Therefore your happiness leads to happiness of another person.
In other words, "to think from other people's point of view" is the basis of the practice of "the mercy" that the Buddhism preaches.
Why do you have to think from other people's point of view? It is because your partner and yourself are friends. You have to understand a viewpoint of each other. To love yourself means to love another person at the same time and to protect another person means to protect yourself.
There is a short tale like this. "When I was the saddest is the time when the neighbor built a house and when I was the gladdest is the time when the house burnt." It may be the tale that talks about a human nature. We cannot escape from "Kleshas(worldly desires)".
But the human being has a heart of "mercy".
It is important for us to widen "benevolence".

I referred to the book, Yasuaki Nara "words of the Buddhism" broadcast library.
